Employment tax research program is expected to spur IRS autumn audits.

IRS is extending its National Research Program to cover employment taxes and their contribution to the tax gap, and businesses could face random audits under the program as soon as this fall. The National Research Program began with a concentration on individual returns and then moved on to examine business and partnership returns, “so this is really just a natural progression,” says Benson Goldstein, senior technical manager of taxation at the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. By including employment taxes in the program focus, IRS has chosen an area that has been a significant problem, he tells BNA.
